The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at St. Edward
The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the generation and education of children, as well as to the good of the couple.
Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament. The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life.
The Christian home is the place where children receive the first proclamation of the faith. For this reason, the family home is rightly called "the domestic church," a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity.
To celebrate your Wedding at St. Edward Catholic Church: You are over the age of 21 and a practicing Catholic who attends Mass at St. Edward each Sunday.
You have been Confirmed and are registered in the parish as a member. You must provide the parish with a new, original copy of your Baptismal certificate. The Certificate must have a date on it not older than six months. Normally your baptismal certificate should contain a record of your Confirmation. If it does not, you must provide a copy of your confirmation certificate.
After you have obtained the Baptismal and Confirmation record, then you contact the parish office at 510-797-0241 to make an appointment with the Priest. At this time, you will select the date for your wedding. This appointment must be at least six months prior to your wedding.
If you are marrying someone who is not Catholic, the priest will provide you with instructions on how to apply for a dispensation. The non-Catholic party must also provide proof of their baptism if they are baptized.
The A-Form is an official interview with the priest or Deacon that establishes your readiness to marry. The B-Form is an official interview with someone who has known you all of your life, preferably your parents. This interview establishes your freedom to marry.
The parish provides marriage preparation classes. This is a six-week program normally on Sunday afternoons. The FOCCUS test is a communications instrument that demonstrates your mutual agreement on many topics related to your life together after marriage.
The parish requires your attendance at the introduction class to Natural Family Planning. Mrs.Theresa Mitchell is also available for on-going study of NFP.
